5 Tips to prepare your Child for the First Dental Visit

1.BOOK YOUR CHILD’S FIRST DENTAL VISIT AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE

First question usually pop-up, when is the right time to see the dentist for my child’s first dental visit? It is a good idea to see your dentist as soon as the first tooth appears or around their first birthday. Regular dental check-ups should begin around the age of two. Your dentist will not only check the teeth, he checks gums, mouth, and jaw as well. Your dentist will also give tips on how to brush properly.

2.CHOOSE YOUR DENTIST CAREFULLY

Choose your dentist carefully, make sure they are not overly booked, a gentle dentist happy to spend time with kids and take time to explain their oral health. A trust between a dentist and patient is important which can only be gained by spending quality time, explaining what needs to be done, how long it will take and how to look after teeth.

3.BE POSITIVE ABOUT DENTAL MATTERS

Your kids will easily pick up your attitude towards things. If you think and talk about dental visit as frightening experiences, your children will most likely take that from you. If you are feeling anxious before going to the dentist, they will adopt that, avoid motivating them, avoid telling them to be brave, do not share your painful dental procedures with them. Always stay positive and talk about dental check-ups as getting the teeth checked to keep them healthy.

4.TALK TO YOUR CHILD ABOUT THEIR FIRST DENTAL VISIT

Talk to your kids about the first dental visit, explain to them what they will go through. Dentist will count their teeth, check how many teeth they have and show them how to clean them properly. Explain the importance of brushing teeth. When we teach kids about their different body parts, we should also mention teeth, tongue, and the gums and how to keep them clean and healthy. These days we have options of picture books and songs and apps to help kids understand and watch how to brush properly and keep their teeth healthy.

5.BE PATIENT AND DON’T FORCE OR PUSH KIDS

It is not easy to teach kids how to brush properly and establish a good oral hygiene routine. But taking little steps at a time can help. Do not force or push them if they are showing signs of resistance. Do not bribe or threat your child. It is ok if it takes 2-3 visits for your child to get comfortable with the dentist and start opening their mouth.
