What is Same Day Crown?

SAME DAY DENTAL CROWN – CEREC CAD CAM TECHNOLOGY

What is Same Day Crown?

Same-day crowns or CEREC crowns or same-day dental crowns, are a type of dental crown that can be fabricated and placed in a single appointment. The process involves using computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology to design and create a custom-fitted crown while the patient is in the dentist’s office. This eliminates the need for multiple appointments and temporary crowns, as well as the need to wait several weeks for a laboratory-made crown to be ready.

Why I need a dental crown?

There are several reasons why you may need a dental crown:

  • To protect a weak or damaged tooth: If a tooth is severely decayed, weakened, or has a large filling, a crown can help to protect the tooth and prevent further damage.
  • To restore a broken or cracked tooth: A crown can be used to cover and reinforce a broken or cracked tooth, helping to restore its strength and stability.
  • To improve the appearance of a tooth: It can be used to improve the appearance of a tooth that is misshapen, discoloured, or otherwise aesthetically flawed.
  • To support a dental bridge: It can be used to support one or both ends of a dental bridge, helping to anchor the bridge in place and replace missing teeth.
  • To cover a dental implant: It can be used to cover a dental implant, restoring the appearance and function of a missing tooth.
  • To preserve a tooth after root canal therapy: A crown can be used to reinforce a tooth after root canal therapy, helping to preserve the tooth and prevent it from breaking.

What goes on in same day crown appointment?

The dentist first prepares the damaged or decayed tooth, and then uses an intraoral camera or digital impression system to capture a precise 3D image of the tooth. The image is then used to design the crown on a computer, which is then milled from a block of ceramic material. The crown is then bonded to the prepared tooth, and the patient leaves the dental practice with a fully restored and functional tooth.

Here are some benefits of same day crowns:

  • Convenience: The biggest advantage of these crowns is that they can be designed, fabricated, and placed in a single appointment, eliminating the need for multiple visits to the dentist and reducing the amount of time needed for the dental procedure.
  • Comfort: Traditional crown procedures often require the placement of a temporary crown, which can be uncomfortable and may not fit well. With same-day crowns, there is no need for a temporary crown, reducing the discomfort and improving the fit of the final crown.
  • Improved Aesthetics: Made from high-quality ceramic materials that can be customized to match the colour, and shape of surrounding teeth, resulting in a natural-looking and esthetically pleasing restoration.
  • Better Oral Health: By restoring damaged or decayed teeth quickly, same-day crowns help to prevent further tooth damage and preserve oral health.
  • Increased Durability: They are made from high-quality materials that are designed to last for many years. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, same-day crowns can provide long-lasting results.
  • More Precise Fit: These are created using computer-aided design and manufacturing technology, which results in a precise fit that is customized to the patient’s individual needs. This results in a better-fitting and more comfortable crown.

What is CEREC cad cam?

CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) is a technology used in dentistry that allows for the creation of custom dental restorations, such as crowns, bridges, and veneers, in a single appointment. The technology includes a digital impression system that captures a 3D image of the tooth, a computer program that designs the restoration, and a milling machine that fabricates the restoration from a block of ceramic material. This allows for faster and more efficient treatment for patients compared to traditional methods.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR CROWN?

Caring for your dental crown is important in order to ensure its longevity and maintain your oral health. Here are some tips for taking care of your crown:

  • Brush and floss regularly: Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day to remove plaque and food particles from around the crown.
  • Avoid hard or crunchy foods: Avoid biting into hard or crunchy foods, such as ice, popcorn, or hard candies, as these can damage the crown or the tooth underneath.
  • Use a mouthguard: If you grind your teeth at night, it’s important to use a mouthguard to protect your crown and your other teeth.
  • Visit your dentist regularly: Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are important to maintain the health of your crown and your overall oral health.
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools: Avoid using your teeth to open packages, crack nuts, or perform other tasks, as this can damage the crown or the tooth underneath.
  • Don’t ignore dental pain: If you experience pain or sensitivity in your crown, it’s important to see your dentist promptly, as this could be a sign of a problem with the crown or the tooth underneath.

By following these tips and practicing good oral hygiene, you can help to ensure the longevity of your dental crown and maintain your oral health.
