Dentures are false teeth that are worn to replace missing teeth and tissue. If you have missing teeth, wearing dentures can make eating and speaking easier. It can also avoid a loss of confidence in the way you look.

How to look after your dentures?

It is really important to look after your dentures, remaining teeth and gums. A daily routine care will help you keep your dentures odour and stain free, keep your denture looking like new and last longer. Below we have put together few tips to look after your dentures.

Tips to look after your Dentures

  • Clean your dentures every day.
  • Rinse your denture thoroughly under water after each meal, clean dentures with soft denture brush. At night after cleaning with the soft brush, soak your dentures in a recommended denture cleaner.
  • Remove your dentures after every meal and rinse your mouth.
  • Don’t clean your dentures with toothpaste, bleaching products or abrasive cleaners or hot water as this can damage your dentures.
  • Place a bowl of water or fill water in the basin or place a washer to avoid breaking your dentures if accidentally dropped.
  • The denture bearing areas of the mouth, the tongue and the teeth should be brushed twice daily. Plaque trapped under the clasps of the denture can increase the risk of tooth decay. Brush your gums with a soft toothbrush to stimulate blood circulation.
  • Make sure your dentures are fitting properly otherwise they will damage your gums and can increase the risk of infection. If your denture breaks or is damaged, do not wear them, consult your dentist asap. Do not try to repair or adjust your dentures.
  • Always store your denture in the denture box and clean it before you store.
  • All dentures should be removed before sleeping to allow the mouth to recover from the denture bearing load.
  • See your dentist at least once a year. Your dentist will assess your dentures, gums and fitting of the dentures.
