HEALTHY TEETH TIPS FOR CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH

  • Dr Singh always emphasise the need of keeping a consistent oral hygiene routine. Encourage children to brush their teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day.
  • Fresh is best. Keep fresh fruits and vegetables handy for snacking. Avoid so called healthy muesli bars, fruit bars or dried fruit snacks as these contain highly concentrated sugars.
  • Water is best for hydration. Encourage kids to drink water, maybe give them their favourite cup or water bottle to drink.
  • Keep sweet sticky snacks to minimum. Limits sweets or treats to once a week.
  • Avoid highly processed foods and snacks.
  • Read labels while buying kids snacks- look for hidden sugars.
  • Always pack snacks or fruit and vegetable sticks when going for a picnic or a day trip. Ask kids to have healthy fresh fruits, meal or dairy snacks before you leave the house .
  • Give children plenty of natural dairy for snacks like cheese, plain milk, unflavoured yogurt.
  • If your child likes sweets like cakes, muffins, or biscuits, rather than packing in lunch box, give them these after school when they can brush their teeth and these sweet snacks are not sticking to their teeth the whole day.
  • Avoid giving children packed fruit juices, cordials, and sweet flavoured milk. In case your child is consuming these sweet sugar loaded drinks, make sure your child cleans their teeth after or at least drink some water to rinse out their mouth.
  • Make sure you see the dentist in school holidays as life gets busier once school starts. Regular dental visits to the dentist keep your kid’s oral health and oral hygiene updated.
