“Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Care”

From the importance of regular dental check-ups to the best ways to maintain a healthy smile, this blog provides answers to some of the most frequently asked dental questions.

How often should I visit the dentist?

Dr Singh recommends a dental check-up and professional clean every 6-12 months.

Why is it important to visit the dentist regularly?

Regular dental check-ups are an important part of maintaining good oral health. During these visits, Dr Singh will examine your teeth and gums, look for signs of decay or disease, and provide professional airflow cleanings that can help to remove plaque and tartar that can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Regular dental visits can also help to detect and treat problems early, when they are easiest to treat, and can help you to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile for years to come.

What is the best way to brush and floss?

Brushing and flossing are essential components of good oral hygiene. When brushing, it’s important to use a fluoride toothpaste and to brush for two minutes, twice a day. Flossing daily can help to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and along the gum line, where brushing alone can’t reach. When flossing, use a gentle, up-and-down motion to avoid damaging your gums. Ask Dr Singh to show you how to floss properly.

Do I really need to floss?

Absolutely! Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth and along the gum line where your toothbrush can’t reach. It’s a key step in preventing gum disease and cavities.

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity can be caused by worn enamel, gum recession, cavities, cracked teeth, or exposed tooth roots. A dental examination will help identify the cause and the best treatment for relief.

How can I prevent tooth decay and gum disease?

Preventing tooth decay and gum disease requires a commitment to good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. In addition to brushing and flossing regularly, you can also reduce your risk of tooth decay and gum disease by eating a healthy diet, avoiding sugary and acidic foods and drinks, and using fluoride products such as toothpaste and mouthwash.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Yes. Modern dental x-rays use very low levels of radiation and are considered safe. They are an important diagnostic tool to spot issues like decay, bone loss, and infections that aren’t visible during a dental check-up.

What causes bad breath and how can I get rid of it?

Bad breath (halitosis) can be caused by poor oral hygiene, gum disease, dry mouth, certain foods, or underlying medical issues. Brushing your tongue, staying hydrated, and regular dental cleanings can help. If bad breath persists, please see your dentist at Heritage Dental Group.

Why are my gums bleeding when I brush or floss?

Bleeding gums are usually a sign of gum inflammation or early gum disease (gingivitis). It may also happen if you’re flossing for the first time in a while. If bleeding persists, book a dental appointment as early treatment can prevent more serious gum disease.

Can I go to the dentist while pregnant?

Yes! In fact, it’s important to maintain your dental health during pregnancy. Hormonal changes can affect your gums, and untreated infections can impact your baby’s health. Just let us know you’re expecting, and we’ll adjust your care accordingly and give you some tips to keep your gum and teeth healthy during pregnency.

How can I prevent cavities in my children’s teeth?

Good brushing habits, limiting sugary snacks and drinks, regular dental check-ups, and applying fissure sealants to molars can help prevent tooth decay in kids. We also recommend fluoride toothpaste (in the right amount for their age).

What is Medicare dental for kids?

Medicare Child Dental Benefit schedule provides eligible children ages 0-17 year old $1132 over two years for general dental treatment. Get in touch with our team at Heritage Dental Group on 07 38783384 to check your child’s eligibility for Medicare. You can also check your child’s eligibility in your My Gov account.

What are fissure sealants and are they necessary?

Fissure sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the grooves of back teeth to prevent food and bacteria from getting trapped. Fissure Sealants are a safe and effective way to prevent cavities in both children and teens.

What is the difference between a scale clean and teeth whitening?

A scale and clean removes plaque, tartar, and stains for healthier gums and cleaner teeth. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment to brighten your smile by reducing discolouration and staining. They serve different purposes but work well together.

What are dental implants and are they right for me?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants can be a great option for people who are missing one or more teeth, and they offer a number of benefits, including improved chewing and speaking ability, a more natural look and feel, and improved oral health. To determine if dental implants are right for you, it’s important to schedule a consultation with your dentist, who can assess your oral health, your individual needs, and your overall health and medical history.

What is cosmetic dentistry and what options are available?

Cosmetic dentistry refers to dental procedures that are designed to improve the appearance of your teeth and smile. There are many different cosmetic dentistry options available, including teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, dental bonding, and orthodontics. Your dentist can help you to determine the best cosmetic dentistry options for your individual needs and preferences, and can provide you with a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve your desired results.

What is a dental filling and what materials are used?

A dental filling is a treatment used to restore a damaged or decayed tooth. The dentist will remove the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth and fill the area with a tooth colored filling material, such as composite resin. The material used will depend on the location of the filling, the extent of the damage or decay, and your individual needs and preferences.

At what age should my child first visit the dentist?

We recommend a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears – whichever comes first. Early visits help your child get comfortable at the dentist and allow us to monitor their developing smile.

Can grinding my teeth damage them?

Yes, Teeth grinding (bruxism) can cause wear, chips, sensitivity, jaw pain, and even cracked teeth. If you grind your teeth, Dentist may recommend a custom-made nightguard (occlusal splint) to protect your teeth while you sleep.

Is it normal for wisdom teeth to cause discomfort?

It’s common, especially during eruption. But if wisdom teeth are impacted, infected, or crowding other teeth, they may need to be removed. A dental exam and x-ray (OPG) will help determine the best course of action.

What is the best toothbrush to use?

A soft-bristled toothbrush manual or electric is ideal. Electric toothbrushes are especially effective at removing plaque. The key is using the correct technique and brushing twice daily for two minutes.

What are my options to replace a missing tooth?

Common options include dental implants, bridges, and dentures. At Heritage Dental Group, we’ll discuss the most suitable option for you based on your oral health, budget, and personal preference.

What is a dental crown and when is it necessary?

A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gum line. Crowns are typically necessary when a tooth is too damaged or decayed to be restored with a filling. Crowns can also be used to support a dental bridge, to cover a dental implant, or to improve the appearance of a tooth. At Heritage Dental Group,  we now offer same day crowns made with CEREC CAD CAM technology.

What is a dental bridge and how does it work?

A dental bridge is a type of dental restoration that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge is attached to surrounding teeth or dental implants and spans the gap created by the missing tooth or teeth. Bridges can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, and gold, and can be designed to match the color and appearance of your natural teeth.

What is a dental bonding procedure and what does it involve?

Dental bonding is a type of cosmetic dental procedure that is used to improve the appearance of a tooth or teeth. The dentist will apply a resin material to the surface of the tooth or teeth and then shape and polish it to match the surrounding teeth. Dental bonding can be used to fix chips, cracks, and gaps in teeth, or to improve the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth.

What is a root canal and why is it necessary?

A root canal is a type of dental treatment that is used to remove infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth. Root canals are necessary when the pulp or nerve of a tooth becomes infected, which can cause pain, swelling, and increased risk of tooth loss. During the root canal procedure, the dentist will remove the infected tissue, clean the interior of the tooth, and fill the tooth with a material to prevent further infection.
