Our dentists perform oral cancer checks at each examination. These checks aim to find any signs of oral cancer or any abnormalities in the mouth.

WHAT WILL MY DENTIST LOOK FOR DURING REGULAR DENTAL VISIT?

Your dentist will examine your mouth, examine all  tissue outside your mouth. inside your mouth they will check your lips, the inside of your cheeks, gums, your tongue, underneath your tongue, the roof and floor of the mouth. Checking for signs of cancer is part of a regular dental check-up visit. 

WHAT IS MY DENTIST LOOKING FOR WHILE CHECKING MY MOUTH?

While examining your mouth your dentist will check for the following abnormalities or symptoms:

  • A thick or hard spot or lump
  • A sore that does not heal and bleed easily
  • A red or white patch
  • Rough or crusted area
  • Bleeding or numbness in the mouth

Apart from the above your dentist will also check for other signs like pain, numbness, or any other changes in your bite. If are experiencing any problems while chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving your tongue or jaw.

HOW CAN MY DENTIST HELP IN DETECTING ANYTHING ABNORMAL?

Your dentist not only check your teeth, he also examines and checks the health of your oral tissue. Your dentist also looks for any changes or abnormalities in your face, neck, or mouth.

Your dentist will not be able to diagnose the cancer during an examination. It can only be diagnosed with a biopsy, a sample or tissue is taken from the area and examined under a microscope. Your dentist will talk you through the process.

CHECKING FOR CHANGES

If you have any lumps or lesions or you experience anything abnormal while eating, speaking, or swallowing, inform your dentist as soon as possible so that your dentist can perform a thorough examination. Keep your dental check-ups regular. Prevention is better than cure.
